TOCPA provides a professional platform to share experience of bringing companies and organizations to operational excellence using Theory of Constraints. TOCPA aims to give TOC practitioners (and those interested in TOC) the opportunity and ability to grow their knowledge and address practical issues and challenges they face in bringing TOC, LEAN to their organizations or to their customers.

WHAT IS THEORY OF CONSTRAINTS?

The Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a suite of management concepts developed by Dr. Eliyahu Goldratt as introduced in the landmark book "The Goal". It helps managers decide:

  • What to change?
  • What to change it to?
  • How to cause the change?

Despite it's name, the "Theory of Constraints" is not particularly theoretical. Rather, it helps find practical, effective solutions to business problems. TOC systematically focus efforts, energy and attention on the "system constraint." This constraint, or bottleneck, restricts the output of the entire system and at the same time represents the primary leverage point for improving it. Simply put, TOC means identifying constraints and managing them, resulting in:

  • On-Time In-Full (OTIF) delivery to customers
  • Elimination of stock-outs across the supply chain
  • Better control over operations and far less firefighting
  • Reduced cycle times and therefore inventories
  • Rapid response culture and fewer chronic conflicts between team members
  • Exposing additional production capacity without any investment
  • Higher Net Profit, ROCE & Free Cash Flow

ANTIFRAGILITY AND THEORY OF CONSTRAINTS - HOW TO LIVE (AND PROSPER) IN A WORLD WE DO NOT UNDERSTAND

Is it possible to immunize a company against the impact of unforeseeable events that may seriously endanger its survival? The recent economic crisis has highlighted the structural fragility of many companies, unable to face effectively some sudden, unexpected and large scale changes in their environment. The presentation will show the reasons why it is important to overcome the logic of Enterprise Risk Management and why Theory of Constraints can supply a company with the mindset, the tools and the processes to benefit from stressors and prosper in a more and more complex and uncertain environment.

Dr. Andrea Zattoni is a Business Consultant and TOC Expert. He has a professional background as manager and Board Member in a big production company and as Contract Professor at the University of Bologna. He is a speaker at conferences on innovative management practices and a lecturer in courses and seminars on the applications of Theory of Constraints. He is focused on helping business owners and managers to transform their enterprises into Ever-Flourishing Companies, by following the Viable Vision process, and on spreading the antifragility concepts and practical applications among companies of the private sector.

THE TOC BUFFER IS A MANAGERIAL MECHANISM – IT IS NOT “ON TOP OF”, “IN CASE”, OR “FOR CONTINGENCY”

Every system has a purpose that is achieved through processes. Managers in charge of the performance of the system have to closely monitor the physical FLOW. The TOC Buffers collect real time data, analyze it and send signal to management. These signals raise alarms when there is a risk of not achieving agreed plans. Hence, managers know when they must interfere and take recovery actions and when they leave the system to flow without their intervention. TOC Buffers and Buffer Management methodology establish Focused Flow Management.

1st Half of Day: SYNCHRONIZING SALES AND CAPACITY FOR CONTINUOUS GROWTH

Both sales and capacity determine the overall performance of every system and every company.

Sometimes there is not enough capacity to support all the sales and in other times – capacity exists and is available but there are not enough sales.

We have found that the lack of synchronization between sales and capacity is a major blockage to the growth of a company.

The Master Class will suggest practical ways to achieve the desired synchronization. The synchronization has been embodied in the implementations of the TOC solutions for production. Its formalization was captured in the standard S&T Tree.

The synchronization is an ongoing process that demands both systems and managerial involvement of the relevant functions – especially sales and production planning as well as tight watch of higher management.

Thereafter, the master class will cover the subject of developing market strategies and show how TOC works together with Ansof’s Matrix.

Oded Cohen is a Co-Founder and Co-President of TOCPA, with nearly 40 years of experience in developing, teaching and implementing TOC methodology, solutions and implementation processes working directly with Dr. Goldratt all over the world. Oded is the author of Ever Improve – A Guide to Managing Production the TOC Way, he co-authored the book Deming & Goldratt: The Theory of Constraints and the System of Profound Knowledge – The Decalogue, and Theory of Constraints Fundamentals, and wrote a chapter in The TOC Handbook.

2nd Half of Day: CONSTRUCTING A GOOD STRATEGY & TACTIC TREE 

The Strategy and Tactic (S&T) Tree is a comprehensive tool that provides clear overview of the way the desired development of the company will be achieved. The main advantage of this tool is that, for every management level, it provides detailed justification of the necessity of planned steps and the way the planned actions will bring about expected outcomes.

The standard S&T Trees were developed by Dr. Eli Goldratt and cover major TOC logistical applications. However, when there is a need to adapt an existing S&T Tree to a specific company, or to build a fully customized S&T Tree from scratch, this may represent a major challenge.

In the master class I present an outcome of six years of development work with companies helping them understand the inherent logic of the S&T Trees and techniques of constructing it. I present rules, examples, and exercises that I have developed in the four areas of constructing an S&T Tree:

  • the content of the entities in the S&T boxes;
  • the relationship between the entities within the same box;
  • the vertical relationship between the S&T boxes;
  • the S&T structure.


Jelena Fedurko-Cohen

Since 1999, she has been working with TOC as an international expert, trainer and consultant in all areas of TOC in various countries all over the world. Jelena is the author of four advanced books on TOC Thinking Processes: Behind the Cloud, Through Clouds to Solutions, Typical Mistakes in Working with TOC Logical Tools, A Good Strategy & Tactic Tree, and a co-author of the book Theory of Constraints Fundamentals.
